Mark Hambourg - 1879-1960, Russian/British pianist, amongst the most famous of his age, whom the composer Busoni considered the finest pianist in the world. His family came to Britain as refugees from Imperial Russia when he was aged ten, and he started a world tour in 1895 aged 16. He was particularly famed for his playing of Chopin and Listz - autograph on 5 x 4 inches (12.5 x 10 cm) white paper page from autograph book, signed by him in thin black ink: "Yours truly Mark Hambourg, april 23 1919" with musical sketch. Tony Hancock - 1924-1968, British comedian and comic actor: from 1954 he starred in the vastly successful comedy radio show Hancock's Half Hour, written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and initially co-starring Sid James and Kenneth Williams. The final series in 1961 included two of the most famous shows: The Radio Ham and The Blood Donor. He appeared in four films, most memorably The Rebel and Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. He struggled with alcoholism and depression for many years, eventually taking his own life whilst in Australia - autographed BOAC Monarch menu, with dedication, signed: "To Perle [?] with best wishes, Tony Hancock". £200  

 

 

 

 

 

"Monarch" was BOAC's famous luxury transatlantic service from 1951 until the early 1960s. It was used only by the most wealthy; the in-flight menu makes wonderful reading, and includes such dishes as "Cayman Island Turtle Soup with Amontillado" and "Avacado with Lobster Mousseline - Remoulade". The menu is printed on card, gatefold, and measures 6.5 x 9.5 inches (16 x 24 cm) when closed.

Myra Hess - 1890-1965, British pianist who made her professional debut with Sir Thomas Beecham, and became a particular favourite in the USA when she toured in the 1920s. Benny Hill - 1924-1992, British comic actor and comedian, first on radio (Hi There and Benny Hill Time), then on TV (The Benny Hill Show)when he became the biggest comedy star of his time. He played comic cameo roles in numerous film including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, The Italian Job) - 3.5 x 5.5 inches (9 x 14 cm) autographed photo, signed "Cheers! Lena Horne - 1917-2010, legendary American jazz singer and actress. She made around 50 albums, and appeared in 22 films including Swing Fever, Ziegfeld Follies, Meet Me in Las Vegas and Stormy Weather. In the 1950s and 60s she regularly appeared on American TV variety shows including The Andy Williams Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Hollywood Palace, The Judy Garland Show, The Dean Martin Show and The Bell Telephone Hour - 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm) autographed photo, signed: "Most sincerely, Lena Horne". Frank Lawton - died 1914, American Entertainer, star of Vaudeville as a singer and comedy-dancer, but most famous for his whistling act which was recorded in 1898. From 1899 he lived in London where he died in poverty after losing all his money backing an unsuccessful show - 3.5 x 5.5 inches (9 x 14 cm) autographed postcard, signed by him: "Yours truly, Frank Lawton". £30
